The hubble is the largest and most far seeing telescope in the world. It allows us to see possible earth like planets and has given us the knowledge we know today.

The Kepler Space Telescope was launched in 2009 with the mission to search for exoplanets. In its lifetime, it has discovered nearly 1000 exoplanets. Including Kepler 186-f, one of such exoplanets that may even be habitable for humans.

I thought the Hubble Space Telescope was extremely cool because it was launched into Earths atmosphere to capture images that ground telescopes could never pick up. The observations that are made by the Hubble Telescope are carried out in visible, infrared and ultraviolet light. Astronomers say that the Hubble Telescope is the most famous telescope of it's time because of its iconic discoveries of the Crab Nebula and Eagle Nebula.

The Hubble Space Telescope is one of the oldest still functioning space telescopes of today. The Hubble Space Telescope was launched into orbit on April 24th, 1990 and is predicted to "deorbit" at sometime between 2021-2032. The telescope is armed with a 7.9 foot long mirror and in total the telescope costs approximately 2.5 billion dollars. The Hubble Space Telescope orbits the earth at an elevation of about 347 miles in space. It moves at speeds around 25,000 feet per second.

The liquid mirror telescope is a type of telescope that has mirrors that are made with a reflective liquid. He liquid makes a paraboloidal shape which is the exact shape needed for a reflecting mirror. These telescopes can only be used to look straight up at the sky. They cannot be moved, so are only good for observations that stay in a place. The liquid is normally mercury, but does not have to be. This telescope is unique because of the liquid mirrors which are not in conventional telescopes. A mercury mirror telescope in Canada called the Large Zenith telescope is the largest liquid mirror telescope in operation.

ReplyDeleteThe Kepler Telescope is a planet hunter. Specifically Earth like planets. It's mission is to discover in our galaxy, as well as hopefully others, is to find stars with planets orbiting around the stars and to find out more about the planets.

ReplyDeleteThe Hubble telescope is a telescope that was launched into orbit in space In 1990. It uses it's 2.4 meter mirror to observe the ultraviolet, visible and near infrared spectrum. The telescope is named after the scientist Edwin Hubble. Hubble's orbit outside of the earth allows it to take high definition pictures without background light. These pictures allow for very in depth looks into space and time. It was not the first telescope put into space, but it is the largest and most versatile.

Deployed in 2003, it's equipped with an infrared camera, spectrometer (used to measure properties of light) and three detector arrays. In addition to SST being a infrared telescope, it follows a heliocentric orbit, drifting away from earth's orbit at the speed of .01 AU. One of the biggest discoveries made by the telescope was capturing light from a exoplanet, making it the first time that a exoplanet was visibly seen. This is a improvement compared to the other ways of finding exoplanets, namely by studying the gravitational effect a planet has on it's parent star and whether or not it tugs on the parent star. The other method is watching for a star to dim or blink, meaning that a planet has crossed in front of it.
The telescope ran out of its liquid helium fuel around 2009, however it's infrared camera is still working, just on the lowest wavelengths. Most recently in 2013, SST was upgraded with new equipment to continue the search for exoplanets.

Named after Edwin Hubble, the telescope can observe light in the near ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared spectra. Due to its position outside of the atmosphere, it's able to take very high quality photographs with minimal background light. The telescope has been used to make scientific breakthroughs such as viewing redshifting and determining the rate of expansion of the universe. Unlike other space telescopes, it's designed to be serviced in space by astronauts. Four space shuttle missions have taken place in order to fix and upgrade the device.

The Hubble Space Telescope is currently in Earth's low orbit and was launched in 1990. Although it was not the first telescope to be launched into space, it is one of the largest and most versatile. It has a 2.4 meter mirror with four main instruments to observe near ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared spectra. It is currently used by many astronomers today to study the universe.

Chandra X-ray Observatory 1999
The world’s most powerful X-ray. These X-rays emit by some objects including the clouds of gas and dust and particles in black holes. Produced when matter is heated, has worked with other telescoped such as the Hubble, to take pictures of galaxies. The Chandra has found hidden black holes. Even took the first X-ray images of Mars.

ReplyDeleteThe Spitzer space telescope was launched in 2003 by Nasa, this telescope was one of the last Great Observatories that was sent into space to collect important data and pictures. The way this telescope works is by collecting data through infrared radiation from other objects in space far away and even in our solar system. Spitzer picks up on radiation from other galaxies, planets, and black holes. It was also the first telescope to detect light from an exoplanet. Spitzer has been roaming space for around 5-6 years and will be able to continue its journey for another 2 years. This telescope was unique and insightful for astronomers around the world, as it brought in new information from other galaxies and cosmic objects.
